Metal Acts Shine At The Shrine (Show Recap : 3/21)

Wednesday, April 1, 2015|by Jason Wood

It was a loud, rowdy night on 18th & Boston last night as 4 area hard rock acts took the Shrine by storm. It is a very refreshing feeling to discover that the heavy stuff is still alive on our side of the state.

Tulsa upstarts, Blackwater Rebellion, showed unwavering promise, as they stomped about the stage. Vocalist Cody Slane brought the swagger and melody while the pulsing rhythm section of Mike Starkey and Darrell Sullivan supported the exciting fretwork of guitarist Crash Owens. These guys are primed and know what they are doing.

Next up was Shyner from Wichita. Having opened for many national acts in their hometown, as well as being seasoned players in that scene, Shyner were no strangers to the stage and brought the rock. Shyner is ready for the airwaves, and no doubt you’ll be hearing more of them in the future.

As the night came to an end, it was time for the headliners, Dryvr. Fresh from a showcase at SXSW the night before, Dryvr were riding high and giving it their all. The dual guitar onslaught of Jude Wanasinghe and Nathan Laird is not to be missed. These two have been playing together for years and it shows. Vocalist Adam Raymond commanded the whole venue with presence and confidence, while bassist Robin Schmid and drummer Mike Depetrillo held it down and rounded out what is an exceptional, professional, and exciting metal act.

The highlight of the evening was definitely a rousing rendition of their new single, “Cloak and Dagger” Smiles coming to their faces as the crowd chanted the chorus with them. A great night had by all, with some amazing metal acts that are not to be missed. Go support these bands and venues booking them!
